INDUSTRIAL INTERIOR DESIGN

This style was popularized in the 90s and 2000s when urban centers started converting old factories and warehouses into lofts and living spaces. Instead of covering up the raw existing elements of a space such as the electrical wiring, plumbing pipes and brick walls,  the industrial style aims to make the most use of the existing structural elements as they are while creating open ‘Loft” layouts with original furniture, wall and flooring materials. Characteristics of Industrial Interior Design:

  • Raw, unfinished yet sophisticated vibe

  • Environmentally friendly

  • Mixture of varying grays, neutral tones and rustic colors

  • Polished concrete floors and surfaces

  • Metal and wood surfaces

  • Functional decorative objects

  • vintage industrial light fixtures

  • Use of vintage furnishings derived from factories, labs and manufacturing buildings

Designers focused on the industrial style make use of the salvaged natural materials and existing exposed raw surfaces.  It’s largely inspired by industrial elements that come from urban lofts and industrial warehouses boasting oversized black metal windows and raw unfinished woods.  Other indispensable elements of this style includes bare bricks, metal light fixtures, high ceilings, spacious furniture and rustic wood slabs. Despite its simplicity and minimal design tropes, industrial style manages to create a bold statement calling for a mysterious frill-less feel but makes up for it with strategic indirect lighting, abstract art and photography to warm up the final look.
